The book club sponsored by the Utah Library for the Blind and Print Disabled will meet for our next discussion on Tuesday, January 11 2022, at 2 p.m. (Mountain Time).
We are going to read and discuss two science fiction novels.
The Caves of Steel. 1 Elijah Baley by Isaac Asimov
A thousand years in the future, Earth’s teeming billions are crowded into huge enclosed cities. New York City detective Elijah Baley is forced to team up with an android to solve the murder of a prominent spacer from the outer worlds. Failure will jeopardize any hope of Earth’s overcrowded population reaching out to the stars.
(Paula’s note: Asimov is one of the “Big Three” science fiction writers. His robot stories and novels are foundational for the treatment of robots in science fiction that followed his writing and impacted the ethics of the development of artificial intelligence.)
Ingathering: The Complete People Stories of Zenna Henderson
Complete collection of Henderson’s stories about the People, originally published in the 1950s and 1960s. The sequence covers a long time span, recounting the experiences of the People–aliens with special powers who resemble human beings but are morally superior–stranded on Earth and struggling to survive. 1995.
