About Our Service

Introduction

The Program for the Blind and Disabled provides the kinds of materials found in public libraries in formats accessible to the blind and disabled. Books and magazines are available in braille, in large print, and on audio digital books. Services are provided by the Utah State Library Division in cooperation with the Library of Congress, National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Services are provided free of charge to eligible readers.

Eligibility

Individuals who cannot read regular print because of a visual, physical, or reading disability may apply for service. The application specifies who is eligible and who is qualified to certify eligibility.

Books and Equipment

Books and equipment are circulated through the U.S. Postal Service postage-free. The library loans equipment free of charge to its patrons, but they must order at least one book a year, or be subscribed to at least one direct mail magazine, in order to continue to borrow the equipment. This does not include materials from sources other than those provided by the Library of Congress and its cooperating libraries. If this equipment is not being used with reading materials provided by the Library of Congress, it must be returned.

Materials may also be picked up at the library. You may check out books and/or equipment and take them with you, or if you phone in your order in advance, materials will be prepared for you to pick-up inside the front door of the library. The loan period for books is up to eight weeks.
