Utah State Library for the Blind and Disabled

About Our Service

Introduction

The Program for the Blind and Disabled provides the kinds of materials found in public libraries in formats accessible to the blind and disabled. Books and magazines are available in braille, in large print, and on audio cassettes. Services are provided by the Utah State Library Division in cooperation with the Library of Congress, National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

Eligibility

Individuals who cannot read regular print because of a visual, physical, or reading disability may apply for service. The application specifies who is eligible and who is qualified to certify eligibility. Application forms may be mailed directly to you by contacting the library, or downloaded from our site. Completed forms may be returned to the library in-person or through the mail. No faxed copies are accepted.

Books and Equipment

Books and equipment are circulated through the mail postage-free. The library loans equipment free of charge to its patrons, but they must order at least one book a year, or be subscribed to at least one direct mail magazine, in order to continue to borrow the equipment. This does not include materials from sources other than those provided by the Library of Congress and its cooperating libraries. If this equipment is not being used with reading materials provided by the Library of Congress, it must be returned.

Materials may also be picked up at the library. You may check out books and/or equipment and take them with you, or if you phone in your order in advance, materials will be prepared for you to pick-up inside the front door of the library. The loan period for books is six weeks.

Radio Reading Service

Radio programming from the Utah State Library for the Blind & Disabled, with the help of dedicated volunteer readers, is broadcast on the sideband of KBYU-FM radio in Provo, Utah and KREC-FM radio in St. George, Utah. The radio reception is currently limited to patrons living along the Wasatch Front (from Ogden to Nephi) and in the Cedar City/St. George area.

The broadcast is received on a specially tuned radio receiver available free of charge to patrons of the library.

Newspaper articles are read from the Salt Lake Tribune, Deseret Morning News, and the Ogden Standard Examiner. Also included are articles read from magazines, old time radio programs, and special feature programs.

Please contact the library if you are interested in this service or would like a broadcast schedule sent to you.
